Recently, Palm announced significant new deployments of the Centro smartphone. StarHub Mobile is rolling out the device in Singapore, and Telcel and Movistar are releasing the phone in Mexico. The Centro is being sold in Mexico in blue, a new color.

Thoughts about Palm's new GSM Centro

centro us.jpg

Palm's GSM Centro has now been out several weeks, and many have had a chance to check it out. I'm going to make the expected comparisons to the original CDMA Centro, but mostly I'm going to ask, "Why has Palm implemented subtle differences in this device?!"

For some reason, Palm engineers used the unique tabbed dialing screen from the Treo 680 on the GSM Centro, rather than the same dialer as the CDMA Centro, and all the other Treos. The question is, "why?"

If the GSM Centro phone screen is so compelling, why didn't Palm include it on the Treo 755, which came after the 680, and why not use it on the CDMA Centro? (Out of sheer curiosity, I posted a user poll on the subject in the Centro forum.)

Will Palm implement haptic response to on-screen key presses? Immersion Corporation interviewed.

One of the most important choices smartphone manufacturers make in designing a device is screen versus keyboard size. Larger screens tend to correspond with smaller front facing keyboards or slide out ones. Few smartphones have both large screens and large front facing keyboards because the combination of both makes for an unappealingly large product.

Last year Apple popularized the concept of virtual on-screen keyboards with the iPhone. More screen real estate is possible with this approach. But Apple's on-screen keyboard has a major drawback. It lacks "haptic response." You cannot feel the keys the way you can on a physical keyboard. There is no pressure back on the finger when a virtual key is released.

Immersion Corporation addressed this issue. Their technology causes devices to vibrate in such a way that gives the illusion to users that on-screen key presses are like physical ones. You feel as though on screen keys move. No special screen is utilized. Only normal built-in vibrators are required.
