PhoneSwitch for your Centro

One of the little things that has always irritated me about the Treo and now the Centro is how it would always return to the Phone application after receiving a call - regardless of what you were doing before the phone call. Arrrgh! Finally the problem is solved thanks to PhoneSwitch, a tidy utility from our friends at Boraware.

AT&T Centro Speculation

WhiteCentro.gif

This week the blogosphere lit up with rumors of an impending AT&T Centro release. Palm's CEO Ed Colligan indicated on a recent investor relations conference call that we could expect the Centro smartphone rolled out on a second carrier prior to the end of February. However, Palm has not specifically announced any new device or carrier agreement.

Generally Palm provides carriers with three months of selling exclusivity. It's likely that Sprint's Centro exclusivity is about up.

Free e-mail and SMS dictation with Jott

jott_1.png

As I'm driving to school, I suddenly remember something I needed to tell my mother. But at this hour, she's not likely to have her phone on. If I wait until I get to school, I'll have forgotten what I wanted to tell her, and I really can't email while driving. So I Jott her.

Speed dialing is a snap when driving, so I just speed dial Jott, and dictate a quick email. It's off my mind, and waiting on her computer when she logs in to read her email with her morning coffee. The quality of the voice recognition is truly remarkable, but the even more astounding part, is that Jott is absolutely free!

Free smartphone e-greetings with Clip In Touch.

clipintouchlogo.JPG

Clip In Touch is a service being rolled out by carriers (and other content providers) that allows users to send greetings to multi-media enabled mobile phones for free. Simply design a greeting using your desktop or Centro browser and the Clip In Touch site, and send it to anyone or everyone you know via e-mail or MMS. Clip In Touch offers a database of professional images, videos and music that can be combined to create greetings, or you can upload your own multimedia files (such as photographs, songs or your own recordings).

We caught up with the company last month and received an in-person demonstration. They showed us how to create a greeting and what a resulting MMS looks like on a mobile phone. The service is a lot of fun for sending joke messages to friends or for sending well wishes to loved ones on holidays.

Should you replace your voicemail with YouMail?

youmail_logo_reflect.jpg

Using alternate voicemail with Sprint can be painful. Sprint customer service very begrudgingly changed my "no answer, forward" number to YouMail so that I could try it out.

(N.B. for Sprint customers: The customer service representative (CSR) who I spoke to assured me that customers can now set the "no answer, forward" number themselves. Unfortunately, the code she gave me to use didn't work. So be firm with Sprint CSR if you want to take advantage of services like YouMail.)

YouMail has some innovative and fun features. The basic premise behind YouMail is that everyone should be greeted personally, and traditional voicemail doesn't do that. So while you can have a standard outgoing message to everyone, you can also have dozens of personal outgoing messages played to individual callers that you can change whenever you want. YouMail matches your caller's caller ID with your address book to give each caller a totally unique voicemail experience.

Could your Centro save your life?

savelife.JPG

Could your phone save your life? Perhaps it could if you have MyRapidMD. I recently spoke to Damien Vallernaud, Chief Operating Officer of MyRapidMD, at CTIA. Not only can you keep your up-to-date medical history where first responders can find it, but right now you can get a free lifetime subscription....

PowerGrid Review

powergrid01.gif

By Perry Gonzalez

I love games. I will admit I’m not that good when it comes to certain types of games. (My eye-hand coordination is not always on the same page, so I’ve “lost” many a Lara and Jedi Knight.) And forget role-playing games! I just look at them and go “Duh….Pretty.” I do like a good racing or flying game. But no complex strategy please! I just want to race or fly…and shoot sometimes.

So I tend to be attracted to games like Text-Twist, Cubis, Shanghai, Farkle (my present favorite), and of course Bejeweled 2. And the thing I’ve learned to appreciate over the years, regardless of super graphics, is the importance of gameplay. Of course, the game pretty much has to grab me immediately.
